Self Reflection

Discovering that I can do what I want, when I want, how I want. I just need to show all my tests, experiments and progress.

I found so many ways that I could express drawing, through pin hole camera, dry point printing and 3D work. I just always thought that I had to show it to my sketchbook and felt restricted to doing so, after tutorials and group crits’ and one to ones I found my own intentions of bigger, abstract careless work does the job (if I do it right!). Learning from this I have moved on to more experiments to progress me to a point I create more. Meaning the more flat 2D tests I made and gathered, I now feel I can compose using these starting points (2D tests) together to create new experiments which show progress of transformation.

From this I have moved away from the sketchbook and back to scrap work and 3D ideas. Doing this created is larger amount of work to show and more to work from and progress to generate new happenings. Its an organized chaos that works for me. Showing that not all tests and ideas work but being able to combine several images has helped finding the good in what I thought didn’t work. I also think having all these experiments around me have boosted my confidence on to create more and keep findings the positives.

Although I know there is plenty more to work to generate, I definitely feel I have found my path of working again. And again although I have finally got the jest of working in a sketchbook I now feel the two working techniques can now be both positives and no longer hold me back! Looking at the two elements as separates that find themselves together towards the end works for me.

Collaberation

This was interesting. As i had no clue what was going on through all of this. Something about reality and fiction, you had to find and understand the grey area in-between. Had a thought to do something about heaven and hell but it wasn't apporiate. Instead we agreed on university subjects. It was to make a lowfi lecture set and talk about broken promises. Spending no money and recycling everything to create a really shitty lecture. We made a video with statistics and politics in, with a voiceover from google to make it rubbish. It truly was the definition of over worked underpaid.

Social Awareness

Sensitive subject. Texting amongst teens. Its a serious thing and happens to most. The percentage is high and will only get worse to the cyberspace always and forever will store that image whether sent through email, text, social media.

You had to figure out whether you were an illustrator or an author-strator. I realised i like to write my own work and then illustrate it. Find it easier to create more self confidence in my work when its guided by a theme and writing by myself. Good project.

Stop Frame animation

First stop frame animation. Never judge a book by its cover. Fun, light and would definitely look into more to sharpen up on as a skill.

Dementia

Thanks to Hilltop Court for giving us the chance to create a piece of work that will help people with late stage dementia. Its been eventful learning about friendly colours and keeping things light and recognisable. I've found a comfortable way to work now as these workings and can be developed more, to a professional smart finish. Two different rooms, one male, one female. Four walls, so two themes. It seemed fitting that seen as both room are where the residents would eat, that they be food based.
Females room is themed with a picnic feel. Including a picnic basket, cake, strawberries and cream. Sticking with a fun light colours, keeping all food outline but colouring goes over the outline to not make it feel lifeless. The same feel goes with the male walls, though these are pub themed. Including scampi and beer, steak and mash.

Golden ratio

Represented by the Greek letter Phi, the golden number is 1.6180... This has fascinated the ancient Greeks, Renaissance artists, 17th century astronomer and a 21st century novelist. since 2003 the quest to know Phi was brought into the mainstream culture with the release of "The Da Vinvi Code" by Dan Brown.

This number is commonly used in the golden rectangle, most artists and architects believe this shape is visually pleasing and beautiful. This is why many buildings and artworks contain the ratio, such as the Parthenon in Greece, but its not known if it was designed like this on purpose.

The Golden ratio is found in nature, plants and animals have a composition that can linked to the golden number. This is why many people think it looks so beautiful.

Company logos also incorporate this so their brand feels appealing to customers, a good example is the Toyota logo.

I found a good article on this here: http://www.goldennumber.net/golden-ratio/

Paul Thek - Questions&Answers

What do you read? How often?
Never judge a book by its cover. I like to think I read a very board range of books. I usually go to second hand book stalls and pick up a few different looking books and plunge into them. Some can be great, others not so but always read and read more. I'm always reading something every day, whether it be the current book I've bought or the daily newspaper.

What is your favourite colour?
Halloween colours:
Pantone 19-3217 TPX Shadow Purple
Pantone 16-0230 TCX Macaw Green
Pantone 17-1449 TPX Pureed Pumpkin

What annoys you most in others?
Being the man at the bus stop.

What is eternity?
An unforeseeable outcome. Something that never ends, never dies and is never seen.

What is the most difficult thing in life for you?
Not being able to express my interest in a subject.

What kind art do you like? Painting? Sculpture?
I don't think it's about pin pointing your full interest to one style, look or way of art, I think its more about expanding your interest in all areas of art and gaining knowledge over it all. Art cannot be contained therefore you haven't seen all the art out there, and by not seeing it all your mind should be wide open to all varieties of art. So this question is, in a way, unanswerable to me.

What in your life is your greatest source of pleasure?
Gaining knowledge, skills and greater understanding in all areas I involve myself in.
